Flowers Delivered In Marlow

'Marlow' might sound like a simple name - and perhaps as though it might be named after a person, a former landowner - but in fact the earlier spellings of the Buckinghamshire town were more complex. Even before the publication of the Domesday Book, it was recorded as 'Mere lafan', referring to the dry land left after a pond or lake was drained. By the publication of the Domesday Book itself, this was already simplified to 'Merlaue' and it's easy to see how the centuries since have led to the present-day spelling. The flower delivery Marlow customers receive retraces an important route where the road between High Wycombe and Reading crossed the River Thames.

Present-day Marlow has a bridge too, a suspension bridge designed in 1832, and much of the flower delivery Marlow customers receive will pass over this bridge on its route to the Buckinghamshire town. The town is twinned with Budavar in Budapest, Hungary - and the bridge has links with Budapest too, as it was a prototype for the Szechenyi Chain Bridge over the River Danube.
